Attracting industries and building infrastructure that will enable the low carbon transition is a key priority for us, as is addressing the risk the physical impacts of climate change pose on our infrastructure and our business’s financial wellbeing.
Since the formation of the group in 2014 we have embarked on a regeneration programme of our commercial property portfolio and in particular the regeneration of the business parks in the Shannon Campus. We are continuing to upgrade, deep retrofit and build world class property solutions for both FDI and indigenous companies. We focus on energy efficiency, while carefully planning our public realm and landscaping to support biodiversity and provide a pleasant outdoor environment for all tenants in the parks.

We have developed significant EV charging infrastructure across our Shannon campus. We have installed designated charging points for our staff while our EV Charging Hub at Shannon Airport contains 150kW and 50kW chargers for use by customers, taxis and the public. We also have installed public chargers at Starbucks, Universal House and Cafe Solo in the Shannon Campus West Zone.
We are a founding partner of FMCI and have supported the development of a testbed for Autonomous Connected Electric Shared Vehicles on our Campus. The West Zone business park has been retrofitted with smart city technology which is being used to demonstrate various sustainable mobility solutions. The testbed has recently been extended to include an advanced aerial mobility hub to develop future technologies in advanced aerial mobility.

The Shannon Airport Group and other local businesses in collaboration with Shannon Municipal District Councils have sponsored a shared electric bike scheme operated by Irish company CoMotion. The business and local community can now utilise a more sustainable transport option with 50 bikes available across multiple parking stations and paths connecting Shannon Airport, our business parks and Shannon Town Centre.

It is predicted that hydrogen produced from renewable energy will be key to decarbonising aviation. ESB and The Shannon Airport Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the development of a hydrogen lighthouse project on the Shannon Campus with the intention of demonstrating the use of hydrogen across multiple sectors.
